Privacy, in plain language
For teachers, parents, and school IT. This is an early product; this page describes how Homeroom is built and will be updated as we grow.
What the AI sees
Before any text is sent, student and parent names, email addresses, and phone numbers are replaced with placeholders like [STU_1] and [PARENT_1], in your browser. Real names are restored only on the teacher's screen, and a privacy lens in each tool shows exactly what was sent. Redaction relies on your roster, the names you type in a tool, and common patterns, so a stray name that isn't on your roster can slip through. What happens to student names, step by step →
Never auto-sent
Homeroom writes drafts. A teacher reads, edits, and sends every message. Emails about medical issues, custody, safety, special education, or strong emotions are flagged with a suggestion to talk by phone.
Retention
The tools (reply drafts, newsletter, conference prep and follow-up) do not store what you paste or the drafts they return: text is redacted in your browser, sent for a single draft, and not saved on our servers. Your roster, voice profile, past replies, class facts, and conference notes are kept only in your own browser (localStorage) and can be cleared at any time. The waitlist and tips list store only your email (plus role and school type for the waitlist). Rate-limit counters use a hashed form of your IP address, hold no text, and are deleted within two days.
Coming soon: when sign-in and the Gmail/Outlook connection launch, a signed-in teacher's voice profile, class facts, inbox connection tokens, and drafts will be encrypted (AES-256-GCM) before storage; email content and drafts will be deleted automatically after 30 days; and “Delete my data” will permanently remove everything.
What we never do
No training AI models on your data. No advertising. No selling or profiling. No student accounts.
Schools
We will sign the SDPC National Data Privacy Agreement on request and act as a school official under FERPA when contracted by a school.
Deletion requests
Use the data-deletion page. Teachers can also clear everything Homeroom keeps in their browser from each tool.
